The International House of Pancakes (IHOP) is a United States-based restaurant chain that specializes in breakfast foods and is owned by DineEquity. IHOP Corp has an Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) running on Oracle 9i with BusinessObjects 6.5 as a reporting tool that offers detailed strategic analysis of the company’s business, examining its performance in the consumer food service market. They use BI for Product Mix Reports for Business Analysis, Daily/Weekly Sales Corporate Scorecard and Division Scorecard for executives, Region Scorecard for regional managers, Franchisee Scorecard for franchisees and District Scorecard for District Managers.

IHOP was keen on the migration of the EDW from BusinessObjects 6.5 to BusinessObjects XI Release 2 platform for performance and scalability. IHOP management decided to have Systech Solutions Inc. to take over the project and complete it in a short time frame. Systech had to complete the BO migration project within 6 weeks dealing the movement of 70 reports (60 complex reports with multiple data providers) and 4 related universes. The latest BO EDW production environment had undergone a number of fixes and enhancements while the BO migration was taking place. The BO 6.5 fixes and enhancements had to be migrated to BO XI R2. The migration effort involved not only the migration from the BO 6.5 environment to the BO XI R2 environment but also involved conversion of the 2-tier reports (Full Client) into 3-tier reports (WebI or InfoView). Additional tasks involved a change request in the BO XI R2 environment.

A Systech BO migration team consisted of a Solution Architect to perform the server related migration tasks and a Technical Specialist to perform the testing and the validation of the reports. The team spent the first two weeks going through the reports to understand the issues and to categorize the reports based on the issues. They dedicated the next two weeks to find solutions to the existing problems. In the last two weeks the team focused on testing and validating the conversion. They also made sure of the format and found that the data was the same as the source report which also included the logos and page format.

The Systech team set the right expectations to work for six weeks to perform the conversion, validation and tests to meet the deadline successfully. They provided reliable reports and were able to complete the BO migration without any impact to the users.
